Doyle

The Story

Some of you already know…and some of you will soon discover … ‘Doyle’ is
special in every way. To make ‘Doyle’ I start with 100 glorious acres of exquisite estate Pinot noir… nurturing the plants in the ground, harvesting the grapes at the ideal moment with loving care, and in the winery offering each barrel every opportunity to excel and shine as the best. Most of the time the barrels of a given vintage are better suited for ‘728’ or ‘Lollapalooza’ … but every once in an occasional vintage, through extensive tasting of each and every barrel, we find one single barrel that excels above all others by virtue of the “right” mystery combination of elements of the season. Amazing! To translate 100 acres into a precious, few bottles of extraordinary wine (this year, 273 to be exact!).

Oh and by the way, Doyle is my husband. Not in the wine business … but he drinks his fair share (as every Irishman should) and puts in his 2 weeks every harvest to feel the love of the vintage. This wine is as outrageous as the man himself. Clearly, this wine  demands a special label, so I have developed an artist series since the first vintage produced in 2002. Just as last year, I again choose to feature my sister's (Jody Joseph) amazing art, a series of 3 collages, and each label highlights another little story in “The Life of Tom and Kathy”.  Continue below to read the story behind each label, and click HERE to read Jody's artist statement.

As I have always said, and as this wine proves, greatness can come from anywhere in the Vineyard.  As much as we try to predict the best place, it simply is not predictable. I start with a great place of micro-environments and harvest a section at a time, and only when it’s ready. And then I follow the old tradition of co-fermenting a variety of clones, where the finished wine is significantly better than the parts.
